Are You Passing Over Great Candidates?
By Matthew Gough, Founder & CEO of Bridgeway Dynamics
One of the biggest mistakes I see in hiring is searching for the perfect candidate instead of the right candidate.
A hiring manager receives a strong resume, but the candidate is missing one preferred skill: They don’t have the exact number of years requested. Their previous title is slightly different. Or they come from another industry.
So they get passed over.
Meanwhile, the position stays open for another month while the company waits for someone who checks every box.
A candidate doesn’t need to know everything on day one to become a great employee. Work ethic, adaptability, communication, problem-solving, and the ability to learn matter too.
Job descriptions should help identify talent—not eliminate good people over requirements that can be learned.
Sometimes the best hire isn’t the candidate who checks every box.
It’s the candidate who has the foundation and potential to grow into the role.
At Bridgeway Dynamics, we look beyond the resume to find the person behind it.
